Both Commercial Union and General Accident were major insurers prior to the merger, too. In 1995, 1997 and 1998, Commercial Union was voted 'Best General Insurer', in the British Insurance Awards, as evidence of high standards of service. Allianz Cornhill Insurance
Allianz Cornhill Insurance is part of the well known European Insurance Group, Allianz. Cornhill Insurance was founded in 1905 and through innovation and acquisition has grown steadily to become one of the UK's largest and best known insurers. In 1986 Allianz Group, one of the world's largest insurers acquired Cornhill. In January 2003 Cornhill Insurance PLC changed its name to Allianz Cornhill Insurance PLC.
Fortis Insurance
Fortis Insurance came into being in April 2000 with the integration of Bishopsgate Insurance Limited and Northern Star Insurance Company Limited. Dedicated to the UK intermediary market, Fortis Insurance provides both personal lines and commercial insurance. The company is part of Fortis - one of the world's leading financial services groups, comprising well established and highly successful insurance, banking, investment and bancassurance companies. Royal & Sun Alliance are the UK's largest general insurer and employ 22,400 people in the UK alone. The RSA Group is one of the top 30 companies on the FTSE 100 with total assets of over £60bn. It's origins date back to 1710 and it operates in over 130 countries world-wide.
Zurich Insurance
Zurich Insurance is part of the massive Zurich Insurance Group, established in Switzerland in 1872 and one of the largest insurers in the world. World-wide it has a gross premium income of more than £15 billion. Zurich came to the UK back in 1922 and now also owns Allied Dunbar and Eagle Star Insurance
